Service to my college and discipline is central to my identity as an educator and communication professional. By actively participating in shared governance, curriculum development, and disciplinary associations, I help ensure that the educational experiences we offer are rigorous, relevant, and responsive to both student needs and societal changes.
Serving on committees and in professional organizations gives me a voice in shaping policies that directly impact student success, faculty working conditions, and the evolution of our field. It allows me to advocate for equitable practices, uphold academic standards, and contribute to the advancement of communication as a discipline.
Engaging in service also deepens my own professional development—it keeps me connected to new ideas, strengthens collaboration with colleagues, and allows me to bring real-world insight and innovation into the classroom. Ultimately, I see service as a vital expression of leadership, responsibility, and care for the future of higher education and the communities we serve.
I serve on Miramar’s Academic Senate as the Executive Representative for part-time faculty. This role allows me to advocate for issues that impact part-time instructors and ensure our voices are included in 10+1 academic and professional matters. Since part-time faculty teach more than 65% of instructional classes at Miramar, our perspectives are essential to shaping policies and decisions that affect both teaching conditions and student learning. Active committee service by part-time faculty is vital to elevating our concerns and sharing the realities of our classrooms so that we can create the best possible experience for our students.
When colleges fail to provide adequate paid opportunities for part-time faculty to participate in shared governance, it limits representation and weakens the decision-making process. Supporting compensated service is not just equitable—it strengthens the entire institution.
Through the efforts of myself and my fellow Senate colleagues, the Adjunct Success, Retention, and Equity (ASRE) Committee was established in 2023. The committee is structured to include ten adjunct representatives—two from each area of the college—to ensure broad and equitable representation. ASRE’s purpose is to provide the Miramar Academic Senate with the adjunct perspective on key matters and to address systemic inequities that impact part-time faculty, the college community, and ultimately, our students.

I support my discipline’s regional association but serving in various leadership positions. One of the things I value most about the Western States Communication Association is the opportunity to connect with colleagues from other community colleges. I enjoy exchanging ideas on how to engage students with communication concepts and help them develop practical skills for academic and workplace success. I’ve contributed to interest groups in Communication Theory & Research, Interpersonal Communication, Health Communication, and Organizational Communication.
National conferences offer a valuable opportunity to reconnect with peers from my doctoral program, share career updates, and explore evolving research interests. They also provide access to publishers and career services, allowing me to stay current with the latest books and teaching resources for my students. I’ve contributed to interest groups in Communication Theory & Research, Interpersonal & Family Communication, and Health Communication.
